Tuesday 10th February
Jon Walsh
Blues Dogs

Jon Walsh is the vocalist and lead guitarist in his own band – The Jon Walsh Blues Dogs, which enjoys a reputation as being one of the most talented real blues bands on the UK Blues circuit. But Jon is also an exceptional solo acoustic/slide guitarist and singer.

Even though he was born and raised a million miles from the Mississippi he brings the sounds of the Delta, Atlanta (where he has performed) and the Piedmont Hills alive in his solo performances. Jon’s style covers a broad spectrum of acoustic blues ranging from delta slide on Dobro and National guitars and Atlanta slide on twelve-string guitar, through to folk, country, Piedmont, Gospel and contemporary blues picked on six string flat tops.
Jon’s singing style can be passionate, emotive and aggressive at times but can also be soul-searching and introspective. Artists covered include: Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Tampa Red, Mississippi John Hurt, Elmore James, Willie Dixon, Bessie Smith, Robert Johnson, Son House, Blind Willie McTell, Blind Willie Johnson, Leadbelly, Big Bill Broonzy, Skip James, Ray Charles and many others. Jon feels that it is a bluesman’s obligation to keep the blues alive by performing the classics of days gone by and also to keep adding to the blues by contributing new songs to the genre. So, his set will include a number of self-penned songs, which are in many ways personal in that they often tell of his own feelings and experiences.

One of his songs “Two Trains” has been selected by the Basingstoke Blues Club for inclusion on its latest compilation album. Jon’s latest solo album “Old New Borrowed And Blue” has been received with critical acclaim and features songs penned by Jon and some old blues classics of the 20s and 30s. When asked about his influences Jon sited Mississippi John Hurt, Blind Willie Johnson, Robert Johnson, Blind Willie McTell, Tampa Red and Son House .… an awesome combination!
Tuesday 10th March
Small Blue
Martin Pyne - drums
Marrianne Windham - bass
David Beebee - piano

Small Blue is a piano trio in the classic modern jazz tradition, featuring material including straight ahead swinging tunes and beautiful ballads , as well as African inspired grooves – but always with a twist, led by drummer/composer Martin Pyne, featuring pianist David Beebee and bass player Marianne Windham.
The band will play music from their new album Furrow, released on Discus Music. Expect music that is by turns lyrical, atmospheric, groovy, and mischievous. The trio have recently been gigging across the country, and picking up great reviews for their album
“Superb contemporary jazz” Jazz Views
“Small Blue might be led by a drummer but this is one of the best ‘piano trio’ albums that I’ve heard in a long time” JAZZMANN
“ high grade Bill Evans Trio territory … each track has its own picture, each track turns its own curve, put all together and Small Blue have themselves a minor masterpiece.” Steve Day
